EpiForce® VM Provides Robust Security for Virtual Servers and Support for VMotion without Compromising Performance

London, June 18, 2008 – Apani, the preeminent provider of cross-platform server isolation solutions for large organisations, today announced the results of an independent performance test of EpiForce® VM, the company’s unique single platform security solution for protecting mixed networks of physical and virtual machines. Apani commissioned VeriTest™, the testing service of Lionbridge in the United States (NASDAQ: LIOX), to measure the performance impact when using EpiForce VM with VMware VI3 (ESX 3.5.0 Virtual Center 2.5). In addition, Apani sought to verify EpiForce VM’s compatibility with VI3 hot (VMotion) and cold migration capabilities.

Results of the test concluded that EpiForce VM works seamlessly with VMotion (hot) and cold migration. In addition, testing concluded that EpiForce VM performed at nearly baseline in typical corporate network application workloads.

EpiForce VM was tested against three key applications: Microsoft Exchange 2007, Oracle 10G and virtual machine-based file servers running on VMware ESX Server. In terms of performance, Apani EpiForce VM performed exceptionally well on all three application platforms. Key findings from the testing include:

• EpiForce VM using Integrity mode demonstrated only a 4.4% increase in CPU load above baseline and only a 4.3% decrease in throughput on the ESX host, a statistically minor variance;

• Under all EpiForce VM workloads, the Exchange 2007 VM demonstrated the ability to perform well below the 1000ms SendMail latency threshold;

• Under all EpiForce VM workloads, the Oracle 10G VM performance remained statistically the same compared to baseline;

• Adding FileServer ESX VMs for network-intensive simulation demonstrated encrypted throughput increase linearly with virtually no impact on CPU utilisation;

• VMware VI3 hot (VMotion) and cold migration processes worked seamlessly with the EpiForce VM installation. The Apani agents automatically re-established communication and the corresponding security policies after the migration.

"This validates the unobtrusive nature of EpiForce VM within VMware ESX Server environments," said Kamesh Pemmaraju, Apani's vice president of product engineering. "Our goal is to deliver flexibility to security administrators that you don’t get with hardware-based solutions or point-product appliances. EpiForce VM provides this, while enabling the full use of VMotion and hot or cold migration.”

For securing virtual servers, Apani EpiForce VM is a unique software-based alternative to security appliances that operate only in a virtual environment and to internal network firewalls and VLANs that are used for physical segmentation within a corporate network. The concept behind EpiForce VM is to provide a single platform that isolates both virtual and physical servers, endpoints and business-critical data into logical security zones, regardless of their platform or physical location on the network. Communications between these zones is strictly controlled by authentication of all machine-to-machine traffic and selective encryption based on policy.

"Server virtualisation is very attractive and provides a wide range of operational benefits, and strong security options are helping organisations better realise these advantages to accelerate the adoption of a virtualised network," said Koichi Takazawa, Apani's president.
"We’ve had a very positive response to EpiForce VM and its unique design, and we expect these results to further validate the benefits of a of a single-platform solution."

The full testing results, including description of how the test was designed, can be found at or alternatively on EpiForce VM is now shipping. For more information on EpiForce VM and the entire EpiForce product family, please visit

About Apani

Apani® is the preeminent provider of cross-platform server isolation solutions for large enterprises. Apani’s solution isolates and secures the communication between servers and endpoints without regard to operating system or physical location.

Apani EpiForce®, the company’s flagship product, is a software-based alternative to using firewalls and VLANs inside the corporate network. EpiForce enables two powerful disciplines – logical security zoning and policy-based encryption of data in motion. EpiForce is a distributed, centrally-managed solution that is transparent to users, applications and infrastructure – making it quicker to deploy and less costly to manage than hardware-centric solutions. Policy enforced by EpiForce is persistent, which enables protected resources to be relocated without compromising security.

Providing an evolutionary improvement in efficiency, flexibility, manageability and total cost of ownership, Apani technology is used by many worldwide organisations as well as much of the Fortune 500.

Based in Southern California, with offices in London, England, Apani was founded in 2003 and is privately held. More information about the company may be found at
