London, United Kingdom, 18th June, 2008

DSP Global, a Systems Management and Integration service company, based in London, is delighted to announce the successful implementation of an enterprise monitoring solution based upon GroundWork™ Monitor™ Professional within Cancer Research UK.

The system is comprised of best-of-breed components, including Nagios which has been created using the ‘Open Source’ development methodology. The solution is both fully functional and highly cost effective, especially when compared with current monitoring tools such as HP-Openview and IBM Tivoli. Thanks to its open source architecture, this enterprise level monitor-and-alerting system can provide comprehensive views across Cancer Research UK’s entire technology estate via centralised “dashboards” and “weather maps”.

GroundWork is a viable alternative to larger, established solutions. It provides the flexibility of Open Source but with a professionally written and supported, easy to use interface” - Nathan Lynch, Infrastructure Manager, Information Systems – Cancer Research UK.

Cancer Research UK is the world’s leading charity dedicated to cancer research and consequently collects enormous amounts of data which needs to be highly available and accessible. Uptime of their databases and systems is therefore extremely important for successful research.

Moreover, charitable donations today are increasingly made online, because it is quick, easy and secure. Anything that prevents this can have a significant impact on donation revenue. It is essential that currency transactions can be donated at all times of day, which therefore requires back-end systems to be always online.

Cancer Research UK wished to be able to monitor the health of its entire IT infrastructure – network, servers, databases and applications – through a “single pane of glass”. This would not only enable IT staff to rapidly pinpoint IT infrastructure problems, but also to adopt of proactive support mechanisms to identify problems before they impact the systems environment.

“We needed a comprehensive tool like GroundWork with an interface where we could immediately see the source of problems – and take action” - Jacky Duncan, Operation Team Leader, Information Systems – Cancer Research UK.

Speed and ease of implementation plus the ability to provide ongoing support, were also high on the agenda, as was the provision of staff training. Not only do these provide greatly enhanced visibility of all Cancer Research UK’s systems and networks, including drill-down technology, but they can now view historical data in graphical format, as well as customise their own dashboards and reports.

Before any talk of installation, DSP spent some three weeks identifying all dependencies and any technical issues that would impact the delivery of the systems. This ensured total compatibility of GroundWork with Cancer Research UK’s existing IT infrastructure. Only then did DSP develop and enhance GroundWork scripts to meet the specific requirements of the internal systems management team.

Being a charity, the client had to work to an allocated budget, but could not compromise on performance. GroundWork easily competes with large Enterprise Monitoring Solutions on performance, functionality and most certainly on price. Moreover, thanks to its fixed annual subscription (which includes support, upgrades and patches) the system can be used to monitor a wide variety of technologies without incurring additional licence costs for the client. With the solution being open source, it has an added advantage of no vendor “lock in”.

“We selected DSP because they offer the most cost-effective solution that matched our requirements” - Nathan Lynch, Infrastructure Manager, Information Systems – Cancer Research UK.

Cancer Research UK was impressed by the fact that, with DSP’s turnkey deployment, GroundWork Professional (stage one) could be deployed in just five days.

The entire implementation (including network monitoring and a DR solution) took just four weeks, including “cool-down” periods between installations so as to allow each system to “bed in” successfully. By aligning resources carefully at the outset, DSP was able to avoid any significant intrusion on “business as usual” workloads, and the whole process was completed with no loss of service.

The installation of GroundWork was fast, uncomplicated and non-disruptive – and DSP’s professionalism met and exceeded our expectations” - Nathan Lynch, Infrastructure Manager, Information Systems – Cancer Research UK.

Cancer Research UK is now able to rapidly spot IT issues wherever they occur, leading to a significant decrease in time taken to resolve problems. Furthermore, GroundWork’s advanced alerting features mean IT staff can now be far more proactive in their approach, anticipating problems well before they even occur.

Besides being a highly-experienced, specialist Oracle and Microsoft consultancy, DSP is the Premier Partner of GroundWork in the UK for fulfilment, implementation, training and support.

As a GroundWork VAR, DSP is not only able to add value from a technical perspective, but could also offer Cancer Research UK a personal service of a kind that larger organisations could never match.

“Open Source products have always been invaluable tools, and with the professional support that GroundWork provides, it finally allows us to bring OpenSource into the Enterprise environment” - Jason Lester, Implementation Engineer, DSP Global.
