Symbol Technologies International, the world leader in
barcode-driven data transaction systems, will exhibit its
full range of automatic data management solutions for the
postal industry at the POST EXPO '97 trade show in Hamburg,
6-9 October.

Located on stand 10058, Symbol will feature three main areas
of postal application demonstrations: Retail Counter
Services Sortation and Collection and Delivery

In Retail Counter Services, feature application hardware
includes the Symbol LS 4000 handheld laser scanner providing
high performance, comfort and value in retail and commercial
bar code scanning, the LS 3603, Symbol's patented "Fuzzy
Logic" technology delivering the first scanner with
artificial intelligence for aggressive "smart" scanning, and
LS 4904, with breakthrough design and ergonomics for
unsurpassed 2-D PDF417 and 1-D scanning.

In Collection and Delivery Management, the PDT 1000 handheld
data terminal with integrated scanning and easy 3-Button
control and PDT 3100 integrated scanning terminal with
signature capture will be on display. Also centre stage will
be the PPT 4600 pen computer operating with the Symbol
Mobile Gateway, facilitating wireless networking and data
collection and management on the move.

In Sortation, Symbol will further demonstrate RF technology
in the postal industry with its Spectrum24 network, the
company's frequency-hopping spread spectrum communications
and data management technology, and it's latest wearable
technology in the WSS 1000, and the VS1000 vision scanner,
capable of reading both 1 and 2-D symbologies as well as
capture and download images to a PC for applications such as
signature capture, OCR and text capture.

postal industry's leading association, Universal Postal
Union (UPU). And 75 per cent membership of the International
Postal Corporation (IPC), a co-operative association of 21
national postal services from major countries, which handles
65 per cent of the world's postal traffic, count on Symbol
to supply bar code-based systems and services.

In its largest contract to date, Symbol will provide 300,000
bar code scanning hand-held computers to Lockheed Martin,
which will be responsible as the prime contractor for system
integration and deployment of the $218 million contract by
the United States Postal Service (USPS).

Under this major USPS program, all of the nation's mail
carriers will be equipped with bar-code based mobile data
collection devices to provide delivery confirmation of
Express Mail, Priority Mail, parcels and accountable mail,
such as certified and registered. This contract further
accelerates the already strong growth of the company's
