IBM today announced a new series of commercial PCs that are
easier to use and less expensive to own and maintain. The
newly designed IBM PC 300GL features a new suite of
manageability tools designed to save businesses a
considerable amount of time and money and boasts IBM's
smallest commercial PC design to date.

"Businesses today are looking at a wide range of factors
when making PC purchasing decisions, and one of the most
important considerations is the total cost of ownership,"
said Sarah Skinner, Senior Analyst, Durlacher Research, Inc.
"They want a reliable package that not only carries a low
price tag, but that will also cost less to maintain over the
course of the product's lifecycle."

The new desktop manageability tools come under the umbrella
of IBM's recently announced Universal Manageabilty (UM)
Services, which expands upon and replaces IBM's Universal
Management Agent. With purchase of an IBM PC, UM Services
are available for downloading (at no additional charge) on
IBM's Web site at
http://www.ibm.com/pc/ww/software/sysmgmt/products/ums. UM
Services is a software programme that allows for remote
system administration. Remote management benefits companies
that do not have a technology specialists in every office
location. They are also helpful to small businesses that
work with outsourced technicians. Compatible with the most
popular broad management packages, UM Services smoothly
integrate into offerings from Microsoft, Tivoli, Computer
Associates and Intel, among others.

"No other vendor comes close to IBM when it comes to
providing customers with the extra tools they need to manage
and protect their valuable IT assets," said Billy O'Riordan,
Client Systems Brand Manager, IBM PSG UK. "Our rich
technology heritage and wide array of resources allow IBM to
provide our customers with PCs that are not only reliable
and affordable but these machines also contain the
leading-edge tools to help customers lower total cost of
ownership."

For businesses that wish to expand upon the management
capabilities of UM Services, IBM offers an advanced suite of
manageability software called UM Desktop Extensions.
Consisting of six complementary software programmes, the UM
Desktop Extensions programme further simplifies basic
maintenance and data protection tasks. For example, one of
the software suite's programmes helps minimise user-induced
errors by allowing system administrators to hide or disable
certain operating system features from employees. Another
tool performs emergency data back-up in the event that an
operating system gets corrupted or a hard drive fails. The
back-up is stored on a hidden partition of the user's local
drive, allowing an employee to continue to work while the
administrator fixes the problem remotely.

New Design Features

Available in either a traditional desktop or microtower
design, the PC 300GL features IBM's smallest design to date
for a business PC, and takes up less space in a user's
office. Other design elements for the PC 300GL series
include tool-less cover removal, swivel hinges for easy
maintenance of internal parts, and an outside sliding door
that covers the floppy and CD drives when not in use.

Latest Financing Options

IBM's finance programme provides customers who spend as
little as 5,000.00 UK Pounds the option to either lease or
buy IBM products. IBM customers who apply for a lease can
expect a credit decision within 24 hours or less for most
transactions. IBM finance features attractive rates and
covers other vendor products to provide small business
owners with one-stop shopping.

Product Specifications

Based on Intel's new 810 core chipset and latest Celeron
processors at speeds of up to 500MHz (1), IBM pre-loads the
general purpose PC 300GLs with either Windows NT 4.0 or
Windows 98. Standard models feature 8.4GB, 10.1GB and 13.5GB
hard drives (2) and a memory size of 32MB or 64MB (SDRAM)
that can be expanded to 512MB. In addition, customers can
choose from a variety of other features including Alert on
LAN Ethernet models (3), 56Kbps modems (4), 40X CD-ROM
drives (5) and an IBM ScrollPoint II mouse.

To customise their purchase, IBM customers can choose from a
wide variety of options including internal DVD modems,
CD-ROMs, Iomega ZIP drives, token-ring adapters and many
others.

Pricing and Availability

Pricing for the new models starts at 690.00 UK Pounds,
exclusive of VAT. These new IBM PC 300GL models will be
available from 7th September.

(1) MHz measures microprocessor internal clock speed, not
application performance; many factors affect application
performance.

(2) GB equals one billion bytes when referring to hard disk
drive space capacity. Available capacity may vary.

(3) Alert on LAN is a solution developed by the IBM/Intel
Advanced Manageability Alliance that helps you manage and
protect networked computers.

(4) Actual speeds may vary and are often less than the
maximum.

(5) Variable read rate. Actual playback speed will vary and
is often less than the maximum possible.
