Hemel Hempstead, UK – 14 July 2008 – In response to the tightened Information Assurance (IA) standards of the recently published Hannigan Report (UK Cabinet Office’s “Data Handling Procedures in Government”), AEP Networks offers forth its AEP SmartGate product which has been purpose-designed to meet the requirements of moving data securely between partner organisations, including up to 256-bit AES encryption as standard.

Stephen Lewis, VP of Business Development at AEP Networks, comments, “Moving personal data between Government Departments, Local Government, Police Forces, Courts, and wider Non-Governmental Public Bodies and Agencies is essential to realising the benefits of the Transformational Government Agenda and to meet the objectives of the ‘Joined-up’ Government policy. However, the loss of large quantities of personal data last year and the outcomes of the subsequent investigations and audits means that the need to handle such data responsibly is at last recognised to be of paramount importance.”

“The lack of cultural, organisational and financial investment in information assurance nationally has been seen by the profession as ‘an accident waiting to happen’,” commented Paul Harding, Head of Accreditation Managed Services at Regency IT Consulting.

SmartGate is an identity based VPN application suitable to secure data with an IA label of PROTECT, that provides a wealth of audit information at both a per-session and per-user level for all secured communications. AEP Networks’ solutions also protect RESTRICTED data and SmartGate can be used for data separation at higher levels.

The highly flexible and scalable SmartGate features enable organisations to operate autonomously in a non-hierarchical structure and yet exchange data according to the rules and standards required by the data owner. The patented secure on-line registration facility and easy to use distributed management system enables practical (and proven) growth to hundreds of thousands of users. This makes it a practical and secure solution to the needs of Government to move data between locations securely and promises to protect Government departments from further embarrassing data losses.

“Solutions also need to be convenient, interoperable, affordable and scalable,” continues Harding.

SmartGate’s easily managed, built-in, two factor authentication and / or integration with most common user authentication systems assists the identity management of large user environments. It also facilitates the adding or deleting of individuals or user groups in single or multiple domains (e.g. starting or completing contracts). Application level load distribution, server level load balancing, resilience and disaster recovery scenarios can all be easily architected.

The product set is FIPS 140-2 assured with the most complete security target of any VPN in the FIPS listings. This means that all the cryptographic and related functionality has been certified in both the server and the client modules; a challenge for competing products that in some cases may only have FIPS certification for a system sub-component, e.g. for a large integer arithmetic (exponentiation) chip.

AEP is currently undertaking a complete refresh of the FIPS certification of this product set to meet even more closely the demanding standards of the UK Government IA policy.

“The recognition of the efficacy of deploying products that conform fully to FIPS 140-2 standard for handling information at the level of PROTECT is welcomed,” says Harding.
