Athens' new international airport - opening next year in readiness for
the 2004 Olympic games - is the latest to opt for multimedia fibre
optic networking technology from integrator and manufacturer Milgo

In a contract with Airsys Navigation Systems GmbH - a subcontractor to
Airsys ATM - Milgo is to design, pre-configure, deliver and commission
the system. It will also provide training and long-term support,
towards a network go-live date of April next year. The contract
follows Milgo's completion, one year early, of a major broadband
network project at Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh airports in

Using Milgo Solutions' own Premnet 5000 high-speed backbone, the
Athens network will carry mission-critical, multi-media information.
Traffic will include surface and approach radar data, instrument
landing system data, meteorological and support system information for
use by control tower operators and associated services.

Europe's largest green-field airport site, the new Athens airport -
being built at a total cost of DM4.110 billion - will handle some 600
aircraft movements a day and is expected to serve up to 16 million
passengers in its first year of full operation.

A leader in its ability to simultaneously transport ATM, LAN data,
voice and video over the same fibre-optic backbone, Premnet 5000 is a
155 Mbit/s broadband campus and metropolitan network, designed and
built at Milgo Solutions' Florida manufacturing facility. Meeting
demanding US Federal Aviation Administration standards, the system is
already used at major airports internationally including Los Angeles,
Frankfurt, Denver and Houston.

At Athens, multiple Premnets are being clustered to create eight
individual fibre rings delivering 1.2 Gbit/s of bandwidth with massive
redundancy. They are being teamed with Cisco hardware and Milgo's own
ALM 3239 system modems along with the CMS400 network management
