New Venture Training has announced more dates for its Press Release Master Class the training course based on what 89 editors and senior journalists want from press releases.

The course will take place in London on Wednesday 10 September and at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow on Thursday 2 October. And there is a “summer special” offer which saves £50 on the usual £195 course fee for PR and marketing professionals who book online before 31 July.

The half-day course is given by Peter Bartram, an editor, journalist and author of two books on press release writing. The most recent is How to Write the Perfect Press Release

Bartram researched the opinions of 89 other journalists from a wide range of newspapers and magazines before devising the Master Class. He said: “I found that the average journalist receives 215 press releases a week – mostly e-mailed – but some receive many more.

“In a situation where most journalists suffer from press release overload, it’s vital that a winning release presents a relevant news story in a compelling way.”

The Press Release Master Class takes participants through 14 steps which help them to write the “perfect” press release.

One participant at the Master Class found it got quick results. After attending, Hanna Backman, who works for Ethical Consumer in Manchester, sent out a new press release. “The Guardian picked it up and seem to have copied and pasted it,” she said. “Apart from a couple of sentences, it really was my press release that they had made into an article.”
