40% more storage capacity lowers cost of ownership - up to
21 MB storage capacity

The IBM Storage Systems Division (SSD) today announced a new
higher capacity tape cartridge for the Magstar MP 3570 Tape
Subsystem and the Magstar MP 3575 Tape Library Dataserver.
The Fast Access Linear Tape C-Format XL Data Cartridge
offers 7GB of native capacity (21 GB with 3:1 compression),
an increase of up to 40% over the current cartridge

With this new cartridge support, customers can now store
larger amounts of data in their Magstar MP tape subsystems.
Now a Magstar MP 3570 Tape library can store up to 420GB
(3:1 compression) and a Magstar MP 3575 Tape Library
Dataserver can store up to 6.8TB (3:1 compression). Users
can also expect enhanced reliability with the new cartridge.

"Our aim is to drastically lower the cost of ownership in
Tape systems by providing sophisticated automation and high
speed.", says Mick Turner, IBM EMEA's Tape Marketing
Manager. "Customers can expect one of the fastest access
times in the industry with Magstar Tape drives, a key
prerequisite to perform well in e-business applications to
decrease the backup window on Unix and NT sytems", Mick
Turner adds.

All Magstar 3570 C Model Tape Subsystems and Magstar 3575
Tape Library Dataservers shipped after September 10, 1999
will be equipped as standard with a new feature to support
the new higher capacity cartridge. Customers that currently
have a Magstar 3570 or Magstar 3575 with existing C Model
drives can field upgrade to this Support Feature in order to
use the new cartridge. This upgrade capability allows
customers who have already installed 3570 C Model tape
drives to protect their current investment in Magstar

Magstar MP 3570 Tape Subsystems with the new C-Format XL
Data Cartridge Support Feature will be able to read or write
previous 5GB B-Format or 5GB C-Format tape cartridges. The
new 7GB C-Format XL Data Cartridge will be ejected in
Magstar MP 3570 B Model tape drives and Magstar MP 3570 C
Model tape drives that do not have the C-Format XL Data
Cartridge Support Feature.

Magstar MP tape libraries attach to AS/400, RS/6000,
Netfinity, Microsoft Windows NT, HP-UX, SUN Solaris, and
other SCSI attached system platforms.
