London (August 2008)- This July saw the launch of the unprecedented British Museum exhibition, Hadrian- Conflict & Empire, exploring the life, love and legacy of Rome’s most enigmatic Emperor. With an enviable reputation for producing the finest luxury scented candles, all inspired by antiquity, Ancienne Ambiance (www.ancienneambiance.com), pays homage to this great man and introduces two Special Edition luxury scented candles: Hadrian and Antinoos.

Hadrian’s empire ruled much of Europe, Northern Africa and the Middle East and, although a ruthless leader, he had a great passion for the arts, architecture and Greek culture. His relationship with much loved partner Antinoos is perhaps the most famous male union in ancient history. Antinoos accompanied him on his travels all around the empire and after he drowned in mysterious circumstances, Hadrian was so consumed with grief that he had Antinoos declared a God, founded the city of Antinoopolis close to where he died and erected many statues and busts of the deified youth.

It is in celebrating this union that Ancienne Ambiance brings historical association in the most luxurious form of candle and connects to this important exhibition.

Hadrian and Antinoos candles are stunning home accessories, contain fabulous aromatherapy benefits for both men and women and can be burnt together or alone.

Hadrian Candle

A clear glass encased candle, beautifully presented in new limited edition black box, wrapped in our signature purple ribbon (the ancient colour of leadership, purple was the ancient colour used by emperors and the senate), it includes a delicate Papyrus description insert (papyrus being the writing paper of the ancients).

Fragrance description:

A sensual and comforting candle, Hadrian, is a dry and soft aromatic with natural amber tones and a powerful diffusive character.
Ambergris resin was favoured by Roman Emperors and was considered rare and costly, found cast upon the seashore. The trade of fragrance created an incredible frenzy in Rome, and the Romans used it with indulgence. Rome became the centre for perfumers who supplied the entire society including senators and mayors, with divine blends of amber scents.

Antinoos Candle

A black glass encased candle, beautifully presented in new limited edition black box, wrapped in our signature purple ribbon (the ancient colour of leadership, purple was the ancient colour used by emperors and the senate), it includes a delicate Papyrus description insert (papyrus being the writing paper of the ancients).

Fragrance description:

An uplifting and warm candle, Antinoos, is the scent of freshly cut cedar-wood blended with fresh herbs, reminiscent of a fine men’s cologne.

Although considered the sacred wood of the gods, the expansion of the Roman Empire in the Middle East saw the destruction of many cedar forests, until Emperor Hadrian put up boundaries and declared them his Imperial Domain.

Hand-poured using the finest natural ingredients, each candle is exceptionally long lasting (60 hrs), burning evenly to the bottom and is richly scented with fragrances recreated according to therapeutic recipes from antiquity. All candles come beautifully presented in gift boxes (NB Limited Edition boxes are black), along with hand-crafted Egyptian papyrus inserts, detailing the historical associations and scent descriptions.

Designed and developed by Adriana Carlucci (named after Hadrian’s famous home ‘Villa Adriana’, she is a former assistant to Vogue’s Plum Sykes, with a family background in rare antiquities)- Ancienne Ambiance links every product historically to antiquity and the beauty rituals and beliefs held by the ancient Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Assyrians, Persians and Phoenicians.

Available separately at £35 or as a set at £60, (inc. worldwide shipping), Hadrian and Antinoos Special Edition Candles will be available to purchase from 5 August - 31st October 2008 at www.ancienneambiance.com and will be exclusively stocked, opposite the British Museum, at It’s All Greek, the leading gallery specialising in contemporary busts and statues (www.itsallgreek.co.uk).
