The popular men’s retailer found that ties, in particular black skinny fashion ties, have increased in sales by 200% in the last six months and overall sales of Moss ties are up 50% on the last six months. The fastest growing colour for men’s ties is red, with a 1000% increase in the number of people opting for this shade from Moss’120 stores nationwide. In total, the amount of customer’s buying this colour has increased significantly in the last six months. Other popular tie colours include pink, with 10% of customers investing in this bright choice and 9% of customers going for black and 6% choosing grey and navy. Nevette Harris, buyer of ties and accessories for the Moss Bros Group, said: “Ties are increasingly being worn as a key fashion accessory both in the office and socially. We have found that historically, the casual dresser is opting towards a much smarter look. “In particular, our young fashion conscious male customers are adopting a smarter mode of dressing and the skinny tie is a key element to this look that they perhaps didn’t wear previously.” The popularity of the skinny tie isn’t the only growing trend among customers who are also choosing bold candy striped ties over bold colours. Moss Bros Group chief executive Philip Mountford says the recession has had a direct impact in the number of people purchasing ties. He said: “Sales of ties have been growing at their fastest pace for five years but we’ve certainly seen a particular increase in people buying ties in the last six months. “As times get tough, money becomes tight and jobs less stable. People become more aware of their appearance and the importance of keeping their job.
