The School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) recognised the need to review its business continuity arrangements after conducting an initial assessment of its capabilities using AUDESAT, an AUDE (Association of University Directors of Estates) self assessment tool.
To address capability issues SOAS, a college of the University of London, selected Jermyn Consulting, independent business continuity and IT disaster recovery advisers, to develop and implement a comprehensive business continuity management system.
Richard Poulson, Head of Estates and Facilities at SOAS says, “We selected Jermyn Consulting after competitive tender. Jermyn’s ability to take a strategic view of requirements and their knowledge of the education sector were key factors in our decision.”
Gary Donlon, Director of Jermyn Consulting says, “We are delighted to be working with SOAS. The college is clearly taking this issue very seriously, as it begins to understand its vulnerabilities and appreciates the need to maintain continuity of operations. We have the skills, experience and process to analyse any organisation’s business continuity and IT disaster recovery needs very effectively.”
Working in partnership with SOAS, Jermyn Consulting has performed the expert research and analysis needed to create a business continuity management system and strategy that is right for SOAS.
Richard Poulson adds “The way that the business continuity management system is being developed has generated full buy-in and engagement from the Executive Board and all levels of management. Business continuity will become part of our thinking at SOAS.”
The next phase of the project will involve Jermyn Consulting working with SOAS to develop business continuity and incident management plans that are:
• Fit for purpose.
• Reviewed and tested regularly.
Gary Donlon adds, “Jermyn Consulting provides business continuity and IT disaster recovery advice for organisations in the public and private sectors. Our aim is to help our clients become as ready as they can be. We have the skills and experience to support business continuity management systems from their inception through to implementation, testing and ongoing management.”
Richard Poulson concludes “Our next challenge is to embed business continuity practises into our thinking so we can do it ourselves. In the future if anything goes wrong, everyone in the organisation will know what to do.”

About the School of Oriental and African Studies
The School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) is a college of the University of London and the only Higher Education institution in the UK specialising in the study of Asia, Africa and the Near and Middle East. SOAS is a remarkable institution. Uniquely combining language scholarship, disciplinary expertise and regional focus, it has the largest concentration in Europe of academic staff concerned with Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
On the one hand, this means that SOAS remains a guardian of specialised knowledge in languages and periods and regions not available anywhere else in the UK. On the other hand, it means that SOAS scholars grapple with pressing issues - democracy, development, human rights, identity, legal systems, poverty, social change - confronting two-thirds of humankind.
This makes SOAS synonymous with intellectual excitement and achievement. It is a global academic base and a crucial resource for London.
