Trustworthy, scalable e-business is not the expensive technical
nightmare that many believe. In fact it's easy and low-cost.
That's the message from Royal Mail's digital security service
ViaCode on stand 148 at e-Business '99 at the NEC, September
14-16.

And to prove it, ViaCode is offering free six-month 10-user trials
of its secure e-mail, Web and desktop solutions to stand visitors
for the duration of the show.

"So many organisations want to adopt faster, cheaper e-business.
But they either think the Internet cannot be made safe, or that
security solutions are complicated and expensive" says ViaCode
general manager Peter Taylor. "The truth is, ViaCode makes it easy
and affordable for the smallest SME right up to the largest
enterprise or public sector organisation. We're saying to people:
don't take our word for it. Try it for six months and prove it to
yourself."

The UK's first industrial-strength Trusted Third Party (TTP),
ViaCode is part of Royal Mail with its 350 year track record in
the safe handling of paper-based information. The ViaCode service
uses full-strength digital certificate-based technology to give
users trustworthy electronic identities, and to enable them to
digitally sign and encrypt information on computers and networks.

Aimed at both private and public sector organisations as well as
government, ViaCode works with e-mail, the Web and many other
networked business applications. It means organisations can reap
all the benefits of digital certificate security, without the pain
and cost of owning and managing the technology themselves, yet
they still retain full control over security policies and
procedures.

ViaCode certificates - issued only after rigorous identity checks
by Royal Mail - are electronic proof of identity that work on
intranets, extranets and the Internet. In addition to acting as
cyber passports, ViaCode certificates enable bearers to digitally
sign and encrypt information. This creates the trust and
confidence needed for serious e-business.

ViaCode is making its certificates the core of three trustworthy
applications. The first teams ViaCode with a number of popular
third-party e-mail products to deliver fully secure messaging. The
second secures any information on the desktop or in storage and
includes a secure delete facility. The third application secures
Web sites by controlling access, authenticating both servers and
clients, and by allowing signed, encrypted, non-deniable
transactions.
