New contact management program TEAMcontacts was designed by men but refined by teddy bears…and is helping to monitor a surge in the hand-made bear population. Software designer Barry Starling knows that small businesses need all the help they can get to cope with the credit crunch, but he found a helping paw rather than a helping hand with his latest new product. Barry, 36, runs LiquidChrome with business partner Jamie Broughton, 33, both from Newark in Nottinghamshire, producing tailor-made software for a small businesses. They were putting the finishing touches to their first product to go on open sale – a Contact and Customer Relations Management system called TEAMcontacts (http://www.teamcontacts.co.uk/) created to help small businesses keep tabs on clients – when Barry met bear designer Barbara Daughtrey at a networking event: “Barbara told me ‘If it can tell me who purchased my bears, and which one they had purchased, I’d be interested,’ says Barry. “Well on the night, the software didn’t include that feature, but two days later it did.” The timing was perfect for Barbara, as demand for her hand-made bears was growing so fast, she had just set up The Lincolnshire Bear Company, employing home workers to help step up production from around 150 bears a year to 1,000 a year. Says Barbara: “I’m absolutely thrilled with TEAMcontacts because it does exactly what I want it to do… If a customer has bought Fred Bear, say, I can alert them when Frederica comes out, and it’s so simple to use.” Now Barry and Jamie are excited by the reaction to TEAMcontacts, which has been attracting sales and enquiries from as far afield as Canada, the USA and Dubai – all within a month of its launch. Compared to more expensive competitors, TEAMcontacts is stripped for action. Says Barry: “It’s new software but based on tried and trusted technology. We’ve stripped out anything unnecessary to make it really fast, really easy to use and easy to share.” The program costs a fraction of what the corporate competition charges. Technical Director Jamie Broughton says: “In the current financial climate, people want – but they haven’t got the money. But we want to put this in as many people’s hands as possible so we’ve priced it very competitively – starting at only £20 for a single user.” Potential is huge.
