8el launches powerful tool for real-time network problem solving

AppFlow is an intuitive and easy to use tool, which can identify the cause of network congestion, right down to individual IP addresses and traffic type. For instance, it can identify whether an application running on a particular desktop computer, or if large files are being downloaded are the cause of network congestion and bottlenecks. This enables IT and network supervisors to deal with network issues immediately.

Says 8el Technical Director Phil O’Keeffe, “We are not aware of anything else on the market as sophisticated, cost effective or easy to use as AppFlow. Customers could build their own solutions, but these would take time and investment to commission and support. What we provide is a fully managed service, including installation. The 8el support team is trained on the platform to provide customers with comprehensive support when it matters.”

AppFlow is the latest addition to the 8el portfolio, which already includes the successful CallPort managed VoIP service, alongside WAN and ISP solutions.

Technical details

AppFlow is provided as a fully managed, centralised service and is in addition to 8el’s existing 8elWatch (which is a bandwidth monitoring tool, included as standard to existing customers). Where AppFlow differs is in the depth of information it is able to provide, as well as acting in real-time.

AppFlow analyses the network through NetFlow and sFlow (network protocols) statistics available from 8el routers. AppFlow collects data stream records of IP addresses and application protocols, creating invaluable graphing of ‘top talkers’ and trends.

Adds Phil O’Keeffe, “IT administrators simply have to log into the AppFlow web portal and in seconds they can view highly detailed reports for each network node. This near real time data offers insights into the running of their network such as traffic patterns and what applications are having the most impact on their infrastructure. The AppFlow service allows customers the chance to understand what is really happening across their network.”

AppFlow delivers a cost effective solution by charging on a per node basis, meaning AppFlow can monitor multiple interfaces per router for a single set-up fee and a small monthly maintenance charge.
