"Text messaging, email, and internet chat rooms are showing us the way forward for English." Professor John Wells, President of the Spelling Society, intends proclaiming this at the Society’s Centenary Dinner this week. What rubbish!

It is those means of communication that have accelerated the deterioration of the standard of English in recent years. Instead of abandoning spelling rules, they should be simplified – the alternative promoted by Simply Words Editing Services.

Allowing people greater freedom to spell logically, as recommended by John Wells, who is also Professor of Phonetics at University College in London, would make text far harder to read.

"The pace of life today is such that people don't have the time to try to work out what someone is trying to convey in a letter or other document, when non-standard spellings of words have been used", says Dallas Willcox, the proprietor of Simply Words Editing Services.

"Using shortened and contrived words may be appropriate in text messages, but extending this practice to formal documents would cause chaos."
