29 year old Spencer Austin, found himself overcome with nostalgia for the decade which had shaped his life – along with so many others – the 1980s.

But for Spencer and his two friends Tom and Luke, even watching Back To The Future had become a painful reminder of what was no more. The only way to cure this affliction, it seemed, was to say goodbye properly. What started off as a pleasant trip down memory lane turned into an incredible odyssey across the United States, chasing new memories to replace the poignant old ones.

The three month, 30,000 mile romp, around North America in search of the heart of their eighties took them from breakfast with The A-Team’s Howling Mad Murdoch, beers with Chunk from The Goonies, eating omelettes with Louis Gosset Jnr, spending the night at the Officer and a Gentleman barracks, receiving lessons in love from Bubba Smith (Hightower in Police Academy), playing football against a vampire hunter from The Lost Boys, being taught the Karate Kid ‘crane kick’ by its creator and faking orgasms in the very seats Harry and Sally lunched in. They also recreated the legendary ‘lake lift’ scene from Dirty Dancing and visited memorable locations from hit movies such as Stand By Me and Mystic Pizza.

Chasing the Eighties is a quirky, thought-provoking journey under the skin of what the Eighties mean not only to those who grew up in them, but every generation who have likewise been snared by the Goonies, the Ghostbusters and Guttenberg. HIlarious and inspiring, it also unearths a number of sad tales of lost glories among the stars Spencer met.

Surely, over one hundred locations and twenty-five interviews with film and TV stars, including from The Dukes of Hazard, Sesame Street, Baywatch, Short Circuit and The Lost Boys, will dampen those nostalgic twinges once and for all…?

Author Biography – Spencer Austin

Spencer Austin is a 33 year-old television producer who spent his formative years in Walthamstow (going to school with East 17 and playing for the same football club as David Beckham are small items of trivia he churns out at dinner parties). In his teens he won the ‘Waltham Forest Guardian Young Sports Journalist of the Year’ and subsequently worked for Leyton Orient Football Club. He was later offered a job as a TV researcher at LWT, where he worked closely with Jeremy Beadle and legendary writer Denis Norden. He has written and produced a number of TV pilots featuring talent such as Leigh Francis and Edgar Wright before ‘Nasty’ Nigel Lythgoe noticed him and took him under his wing. From there he went on to devise and freelance produce shows (Celebrity Stitch-Up, Your Face or Mine, Gagging For It, RI:SE, Rajan and his Evil Hypnotists) that have been sold in the UK and internationally. Last year he formed Hideous Productions and created a show called ‘24 Hours With…’ for ITV1, later selling it to 11 countries all over the world. He now lives on the Isle of Dogs with no-one but himself.
