Datanomic’s dn:Director Cleans Data to Help Improve Customer Services, Fulfill Legal Requirements Around Data Protection, and Reduce Instances of Fraud

Data enhancement and management specialists, Datanomic Ltd today announced that Brent Council has selected Datanomic’s dn:Director to play an important role in cleansing data for the Brent Client Index. The Client Index is a centrally held index of Brent’s citizens which provides a holistic view of individuals by matching data from the back office systems which support the Council’s various lines of business. dn:Director will improve the quality of key elements of data such as address, gender, email address and phone numbers and then integrate with the Initiate Identity Hub which provides the matching engine at the heart of the Client Index. dn:Director’s reporting metrics and dashboard features will be used to demonstrate higher data quality improvements and reporting to respective senior management in each Council department.

“Data quality is a critical issue for us in terms of compliance with Data Protection requirement but also because good quality data enables better customer service provision,” said Tony Ellis, Head of IT for Brent Council. “With Datanomic’s dn:Director we are able to use improvements in the quality of our data to deliver improvements directly in our levels of customer service, reduce our cost of contacting customers, and reduce instances of fraud through consistency and greater transparency of our core systems data. We selected Datanomic on the technical strength of their performance and dn:Director’s ease of use. We like to take a partnership approach with all our suppliers and we look forward to long and fruitful relationship with Datanomic. As part of our proof of concept, we gave them 100,000 records directly from our Client Index, and the dn:Director system provided a complete breakdown of statistics on invalid or poor quality data fields in just a matter of minutes.”

Brent Council will be deploying the Datanomic system over the coming months. Nine of the Council’s back office and departmental systems feed into the Client Index, including Housing Benefits, Housing, Revenues and Benefits, Social Care for Children and Adults, Electoral Registration, CRM, Complaints, Schools and the Library system. dn:Director will be used to automatically cleanse the data on a daily basis as change of circumstances information flows into the Index. Over time, Datanomic will be extended to integrate with up to 20 of the Council’s back office systems which will be feeding the Client Index.

“One of the biggest costs of managing a Client Index or identity hub is Data Stewards having to manually tidy up data. Using the power of Datanomic we are able to automatically and efficiently improve the quality of our information and that in turn realises additional value from the investment we’ve already made in our Client Index by giving us a greater number of automatic data matches and far fewer for the Data Stewards to manually resolve,” added Ellis. “This not only reduces the cost of running the system, but also provides a consistent means of tracking data quality, improving our overall service, and fulfilling our legal requirements. Datanomic will help us achieve our aim of becoming a 'Centre of Excellence' for Data Management. By delivering a more efficient service provision through better data quality, we will be able to reap both cashable and non-cashable savings.”

As Chairman of the Local Government Partnership group, Data Connects, Tony Ellis is committed to helping other Local Government Authorities learn best practice for implementing ‘Single View of Citizen’ data strategies. Mr Ellis will be delivering the keynote address at Datanomic’s forthcoming Local Government seminar, to be held at Wembley Stadium on 12th November 2008. In his address, Tony will be outlining the challenges and solutions to deploying cross-council services via the Brent Client Index. The free seminar is open to all Local Government executives with responsibility for data management and SVC systems deployment. Registration is via Datanomic’s website at
