Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth named as IT Community Hero of the Year

CNET Networks UK announces winners of the 2008 Business Technology Awards (

London, 24 September 2008: CNET Networks UK, the UK’s largest online-only publisher, today announced the winners of the sixth annual UK Business Technology Awards. In one of the most prestigious events in the IT calendar, the finalists were honoured last night at an elite networking dinner, held in London's famous Park Lane Hilton.

The most illustrious award of the evening went to founder of the Ubuntu Foundation, Mark Shuttleworth, who received the inaugural ‘IT Community Hero of the Year’ award. Shuttleworth was recognised for the support he has given to the community of developers working on the Ubuntu project and his commitment to a freely available operating system that can be used by anybody, anywhere in the world.
Also worthy of special mention this year is David Lister from Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), the proud winner of the CIO of the Year Award. Beating a fierce array of competition, David secured the majority vote after taking on a giant role at RBS following years of driving a successful business transformation programme at Reuters.

Synonymous with innovation, application and excellence, winning a CNET Networks UK Business Technology award has become one of the most sought-after accolades for those involved in business and technology in the UK, and this year’s awards proved to be the most hotly contested yet. Hosted by impressionist Jon Culshaw, last night’s ceremony featured 16 categories in total ranging from ‘IT Team of the Year,’ won by Credit Suisse for the GEARS (Global Equities Aggregated Risk System) IT project, to Green IT initiative of the year where BT Operate were recognised for their 21st Century Network Data Centre Project..

In congratulating the winners, Tony Hallett, Editorial Director, Technology and Business for CNET Networks UK, said: “2008 has been another fantastic year for the UK technology industry despite the current economic climate. The quality of the entries we received is testament to the outstanding talent of all those involved in business and technology in the UK and proof that innovation in the industry is still going strong. I would like to congratulate all the award winners on their success and hope the next 12 months are equally as impressive."

Next year’s UK Business Technology Awards will open in early 2009. Companies interested in nominating their products or projects can find out more at or contact
