Reading, UK, 29th September 08 – British managed VoIP and data communications provider 8el is formally launching its SIP trunking solution at IP 08 (London Earls Court, 1- 2 October). This enables VoIP customers to reduce the costs associated with telephony, while providing greater flexibility over numbering and scalability. 8el is now one of few communications providers to make the benefits of SIP trunking available as a commercial service to business users and has already successfully deployed the service to a number of UK customers.

SIP (Session Internet Protocol) trunking enables customers to reduce or even eliminate dependency on the traditional PSTN (public switched telephone network) for business VoIP, by routing traffic across an IP circuit instead of via ISDN lines.

Other benefits include scalability – whether up or down – on a ‘per channel’ basis. SIP trunking is also not dependent on geography, so the network will route calls to wherever the recipient is located, without creating any call-forwarding costs. DDI numbers can also be allocated quickly and cost effectively and calls between SIP trunking users in the same network are free.

Installing SIP trunking simply involves adding an extra IP interface into the customer’s data network and this is part of the ‘all in one’ service that 8el provides. As is the case with any other 8el service, 24/7 network monitoring is also available through our managed SIP trunk service. There are two main forms of SIP trunking: ‘managed’ and ‘unmanaged’.

Says Justin Hamilton-Martin, “With a managed service, users access our SIP based network via an on-site IP or ISDN based device, to create a SIP link to our core. In addition, to ensure security is maintained for customers, we authenticate by IP address, route, user name and password via our Session Border Controllers.”
