According to industry association AIIM, records managers and IT managers need to be more aware of how and where to apply MoReq2, which is a model requirements specification for the management of electronic records. Released earlier this year, it was developed on behalf of the EU by a grouping of national archives, suppliers, consultants and users, and sets out the essential and desirable features for buying, implementing and maintaining a records management system. AIIM will be running a 1-day educational conference to help all those involved in electronic records management both for public sector organisations and for regulated industries.

Based on the original specification released in 2001, the second version of MoReq has been considerably updated and covers extended content types such as emails and case files. It has also been designed as a testable standard along the lines of the US DOD 50.15.2 and the UK TNA Approval scheme, which will be replaced by MoReq2. Independent testing of systems is expected to get underway in 2009. MoReq2 also contains useful best practice for those managing or extending existing EDRMS systems.

According to Doug Miles, AIIM’s UK Managing Director, “MoReq2 includes much useful guidance for anyone involved in procuring or managing a document, content or records management system, including IT managers who need to maintain compliant email archive systems.”

The Advanced Records Management and the Role of MoReq2 workshop is on November 27th at the Copthorne Hotel, Slough, and details are available at www.rmworkshop.org.uk or from AIIM on 01905 727600.
