Gary Eastwood has won the 2008 Take a View Landscape Photographer of the Year competition. Gary’s winning picture shows his dog enjoying a magnificent sunset on a jetty in Hove, East Sussex. This year’s theme was the great outdoors and thousands of entries were submitted to this annual award, now in its second year.

“Receiving the phone call from my hero, Charlie Waites – one of Britain’s best landscape photographers and founder of Take a View – telling me I’d won the prize was the best surprise I’ve ever had,” he said. “Winning the competition has given a tremendous boost to my confidence and ambition to become a professional photographer.”

Gary receives £10,000 for the top prize and a jacket from Páramo Directional Clothing Systems. His winning photo will appear in a nine-week exhibition of all the winning images from this year’s competition at London’s prestigious National Theatre from November 18 to January 17. In addition, it will be included in the 2008 book, Landscape Photographer of the Year – Collection 02 (AA Publishing, £25) published on 31 October.

As well as the winning photo, Gary received a Commended for a second image of a jogger on Hove promenade battling through a freak snowstorm in April. This will also appear in the book and at the exhibition as a display print.

The 2008 Take a View awards were sponsored by The Sunday Times Magazine and the leading tourist agencies of the UK & Channel Islands: Enjoy England, Visit Wales, VisitScotland, VisitBritain, Britain on View, VisitGuernsey, Jersey Tourism and the Northern Ireland Tourist Board.
