Desktop application management feature of LANDesk Management Suite simplifies and speeds the software management process for busy IT administrators

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., October 17, 2008 -- Avocent Corporation (NASDAQ: AVCT), a global leader in IT Operations Management, today announced the addition of a key feature called LaunchPad® to its LANDesk Management Suite 8.8. LaunchPad® allows companies to more easily distribute new applications, or update existing applications for users across corporate networks. The offering addresses the needs of enterprise users who are seeking ways to improve their IT operations and their bottom line while alleviating the pain of daily software administration.

“IT administrators are heavily burdened with daily software requests and related issues from network users,” said Avocent CTO Ben Grimes. “With requests ranging from basic software installations and updates, to misplaced icons and system configuration missteps, help desks are overwhelmed and our goal with this release is to simplify and speed the overall software management process. We engineered LaunchPad to help IT administrators get in front of that workload by empowering them with centralized configuration and application control.”

LANDesk Management Suite customers already have the ability to distribute numerous software packages to multiple users in a single operation without requiring dedicated hardware, and to control software availability with policy-based distribution. Now, with the release of SP2 for version 8.8, administrators gain greater ability to automate handling of software requests on the back-end while enjoying a convenient centralized location for application installs and execution.

Instead of traveling from one computer to the next to install or troubleshoot applications, administrators can perform the distribution of, and access to, software through LaunchPad. Applications can be configured to install from the LaunchPad window, desktop or Start menu. End users see only those applications configured for their own use by qualified IT administrators.

Other new, key advantages offered by LANDesk Management Suite 8.8 include:

• Centralized application control—Enables delivery of both physical and virtual applications without manually modifying the installation. Administrators can easily distribute the correct shortcuts and software to the right users or groups.

• Just-in-time applications—Allow configuration of software and publishing of application shortcuts without prior local client installation. Applications install the first time a user clicks on the icon.

• Process-driven deployment—Embedded process control in LaunchPad, powered by LANDesk Process Manager technology, gathers the correct approvals, conducts audits and delivers the software package in an automated fashion.

• Application types supported include existing LANDesk software distribution packages, all executable files, Web URLs, and LANDesk processes.

“Software distribution and management needs have grown as the workforce has become more distributed, and being able to make more software updates in real-time is key," said Pete Maudlin, Integration Specialist at Farm Credit Services America. "Avocent's LANDesk Management Suite helps us to simplify the process, so we can remain productive and better manage the bottom line.”
The Launchpad feature of LANDesk Management Suite 8.8 is available via a service pack (SP2) release. For more information, go to
