Beat the Christmas credit crunch with Shopzilla

- £260 online saving on top gifts v. High Street -

Shoppers who buy their presents online this Christmas can ease their credit crunch worries with savings of up to 32% on this year’s must-have gifting items, according to a survey by leading price comparison website

Shopzilla researchers found that 20 of this year’s top gifts – using lists compiled by consumer group Which? and the Toy Retailers Association – were more than £260 cheaper online than on the high street, representing a saving of more than 11% even after accounting for delivery charges.

The real saving is likely to be even more as the additional costs associated with a shopping outing to the high street – such as petrol, parking and public transport – were not included in the calculation.

Scott Macon, Managing Director for Shopzilla Europe, said: “These findings show the considerable savings that shoppers can make if they buy their Christmas presents online.

“We know that many of us will be looking to save money this Christmas and Shopzilla can help you do just that, at the same time as allowing you to shop from the comfort of your own home.”

As well as flagging up the best prices online, Shopzilla’s Customer Certified Merchant Programme allows shoppers to review and research online retailers who are given ratings for a list of criteria including overall satisfaction, choice, customer support and on-time delivery.

Among this year’s top savings to be found on toys online are £5.99 off the typical high street price of High School Musical Dance Mat (a saving of 26%), £7.54 off Star Wars Clone Trooper Voice Changer (25.1% saving) and more than £20 off what is set to be one of this year’s most sought after items, the life-like FurReal Biscuit Golden Retriever puppy (13.4% saving).

Some of the biggest money savings are to found on more expensive electrical items, particularly the latest must-have cameras. For example, the Olympus Mju 1050sW can cost as little as £192.95 through Shopzilla, compared with a typical price of £249.99 on the high street (22.5% saving). Meanwhile, Shopzilla shoppers can save more than £36 on the Oral-B Triumph electric toothbrush, while a saving of more than £66 can be found on the Canon EOS 450D camera.

Macon adds: “The internet has not only made shopping easier than ever before, it has also made it cheaper and that has to be good news for shoppers everywhere this Christmas.”
