Florverde®, the programme that ensures best working practices and ethical growing conditions for Colombian grown flowers, has been given a major boost this month. A move that means everyone can confidently buy beautiful Colombian flowers knowing they’ve been grown in the very best conditions for both the workers and the planet.

Because, after extensive studies and on-the-ground observation for more than a year, GLOBALGAP (The Global Partnership for Good Agricultural Practice) has officially recognised the Florverde programme and granted the programme its international seal, regarded as one of the most important certifications in the world. In addition Florverde has been invited to participate in GLOBALGAP’s developments and governing committee that set standards for agriculture and environmental practices around the world.

August Solano, President of Asocolflores, the Colombian Flower Growers Association that founded Florverde 12 years ago said: “This is a major milestone for the Colombian flower industry and international approval for the work we are doing. For the last 12 years, Florverde farms have been committed to leading the flower industry in social and environmental practices because we know how important it is. Not only do the standard of these two certifications preserve and protect fertile soil and natural resources with the mission to achieve sustainable agriculture but show the world just how good the Colombian flower industry is.”

Notes to Editors

About Florverde

Florverde does what it’s says because in Spanish Florverde literally means green flowers! Established in 1996 by Asocolflores, the Association of Colombian Flower Growers, the programme has developed into one of the most respected in the world and has helped improve both Colombian workers quality of life and environmental standards.

Back then, the vision was to lead the flower industry and improve practices by establishing and regulating a strict set of social and environmental standards as well as a code of conduct. Now, 12 years later, that vision has come true with more than 171 farms, covering more than 7,600 acres of dedicated flower production, qualifying for, or in the process of qualifying for, Florverde certification.

GLOBALGAP is a private sector body that sets voluntary standards for the certification of agricultural products around the world. The GLOBALGAP standard and certification is designed to reassure trade partners that the most advanced and beneficial production methods and processes are adhered to by certified farms.

Complying with the international standard minimises detrimental environmental impacts of farming operations, reduces the use of chemical inputs and ensures a responsible and comprehensive approach to worker health and safety.
