Hosted solution ideal for small and medium businesses and includes an energy efficient IGEL Universal Desktop

01 December 2008, London, UK: Alchemy Systems today launched its Virtual Open Desktop solution designed to solve the computing needs of small and medium sized businesses for just £9.99 (+VAT) a month, including an IGEL Universal Desktop.

Virtual Open Desktop delivers a complete business productivity solution based on Open Office, a multitude of email clients (eg Zimbra and Thunderbird) and the FireFox web browser. Everything is hosted and secured centrally by Alchemy Systems and accessed by the customer via the Internet using the software as a service model (SaaS). Data is protected and kept private by Alchemy Systems with each customer having access to a separate virtual machine and all data is backed-up to an off site location. The solution includes an energy efficient IGEL Universal Desktop, so that customer hardware is kept efficient, simple, robust and easy to support remotely.

Customers can work with Microsoft documents due to the excellent document format support from Open Office. In fact, the default document format for read and write can be set to Microsoft. Customers wanting to have additional corporate applications such as SAP, Sage, Netsuite or can access them using the included Firefox web browser.

“In today’s difficult economic climate, small and medium-sized business owners need to be able to concentrate on their business rather than worry about their IT infrastructure,” said Nathan Mills, managing director of Alchemy Systems. “Virtual Open Desktop solves this problem, providing carefree computing at very low cost.”

Stephen Yeo, worldwide strategic marketing director for IGEL Technology, added: “IGEL is proud to be a part of Alchemy’s Virtual Open Desktop. It is one of the most innovative solutions we have seen and we feel it will really help organisations enjoy quality IT at a very affordable price, which in today’s economy is of critical importance. By using an IGEL Universal Desktop, customers can enjoy great performance, security and hassle free computing. It helps deliver a quality solution at a very affordable price.”
