Across the globe endless would-be Linford Christies and Paula Radcliffes are no doubt limbering up in wake of the 2008 San Silvestre Vallecana - an epic 10-kilometre dash through Madrid's Vallecas district this New Year's Eve.

The event, an annual tradition in the Spanish capital since 1964, is now sponsored by the Nike Start2Run campaign - attracting both competitors and spectators.

It encourages people of varying levels of fitness and is split into two categories in order to give everyone who wants to take part the opportunity to do so.

The Popular race, now in its 31st year, is open to any runner over the age of ten with a total of 27,500 places are available in the event - which begins at 18:00 local time on New Year's Eve.

Meanwhile the International race, which has been taking place for a total of 44 years, is slightly more selective - offering only 1,000 positions.

It is open to anyone fulfilling the criteria of having previously registered a time of less than 39 minutes for men and 45 minutes for women in a number of recognised races during 2008 or in the 2007 San Silvestre Vallecana.

The International race begins at 20:00 local time on December 31st 2008, giving those taking part as well as those eager to watch the New Year's Eve spectacle.
