Research by leading international retail network, Patonz, shows Credit Crunch fever has really hit the High Street – with 60% more stores going into SALE mode before Christmas in 2008 versus 2007
The number of UK High Street retail multiples who have already launched their Christmas sales has reached 52, compared with 33 in 2007, which is a 60% increase year on year. As of the 16th December 2008, 52 of the 248 major retailers covered by the survey are trading SALE. while on the 16th December 07, 33 of the 248 retailers were trading SALE. When stores offering discounts and combination offers are added into the equation, 45% of UK High Street retailers are now either in full SALE mode or heavily discounting.
Brendan Dorrian, Chief Executive Officer, Patonz Global Retail Network says, “Our daily survey, completed every day during December, of UK High Street retailers has shown a like for like increase in those trading SALE, every day since 1st December. Throughout November our Compshop* survey found retailers mounting concurrent promotional campaigns offering consumers money-off, with discounts of up to 50%. However, since the start of December the combination of reduced footfall and probable overstocks has resulted in a more aggressive promotional position. A number of global players have begun their sale earlier this year than last, including GAP and H&M, alongside UK retailers such as Karen Millen and Warehouse. We surveyed Dorothy Perkins on Wednesday morning and noted a '20% off' promotional campaign, but by Wednesday afternoon, a ‘50% off’ campaign was being launched.”
