Managed print service provider Cats Solutions is showing serious commitment to the environment with a range of initiatives designed to offset its own carbon footprint and the footprint of each print produced. As part of its environmental campaign it has launched the Cats Solutions Forestry scheme which has to date involved planting 10,200 trees, covering 18 acres of land, to offset a year’s worth of carbon emissions.

Using a number of different measures such as printing double sided, having a ‘switch it off!’ policy for all electrical equipment when not in use and recycling all waste paper, cardboard and toner cartridges, Cats Solutions has reduced its own carbon footprint by an impressive 28 per cent.

Greg Smith, Managing Director, Cats Solutions, comments, “many businesses today are trying to jump on the “green” bandwagon, calling themselves “environmentally friendly”, but how many include environmental responsibility as a factor in purchasing decisions? With increasing numbers of businesses striving to recycle more, save energy and be carbon neutral it is now important for these organisations to give preference to suppliers that also take serious and demonstrable measures to back up their marketing claims.”

The company has just received accreditation to the ISO 14001 standard for environment management, showing that it has made significant improvements to reducing its impact on the environment. While this is a significant achievement, Cats Solutions is going even further in its efforts. It has replaced part of its previous “fossil fuel” fleet and has introduced electric “mega vans” to deliver customer print jobs on local or campus sites.

Cats Solutions Chairman, Bill Joss states “in the last 12 months we have produced over half a billion prints and we wanted to do something tangible and substantial to offset the carbon emissions this created. We launched the Cats Solutions Forestry scheme in spring 2008 and have been successful in planting enough trees to offset a year’s carbon emissions. We are now encouraging our customers to help us offset the carbon emission of each piece of paper printed by giving the option of paying a tiny premium for additional trees to be planted. This way we aim to offset every job we produce and thereby offer clients a straightforward way to reduce the impact of their own print output.”
