British sports fans have always been a knowledgeable bunch with almost 80% of sports fans believing that they could do a better job than professional pundits(*),

Sport now dominates the on-line market with over 40% of internet users,16,000,000 unique visitors, visiting sports related websites such as newspapers, blogs, fan sites and forums, a month. On-line ‘citizen’ journalism and broadcast phone in shows have also encouraged fans to voice their opinions. However they are also a busy group with under 2 minutes per day to spend on reading sport* and with so much sports news and opinion on the web it has never been harder to find the stories worth reading in the time available.

Now Punditit, a new sports social news site, is set to solve this problem by letting the fans rate the quality and merits of sports stories themselves. Punditit allows fans to share and vote on links to sports news, comment, opinion and vidoes from anywhere on the web. The links with the most votes move to the Front Page which is an indication that the story has merit. Fans can also add their opinion to links and comment on other Pundit’s links, which sometimes makes for heated exchanges.

The site is segmented by sports so that fans can choose to view Football, Cricket, Rugby Union or League, Golf, Tennis, Motorsport or Boxing. There is also an area for minority sports. is quickly expected to become part of mainstream sports culture and is one of the first sites in the UK to launch with Facebook® Connect capability. This allows users to seamlessly login with their Facebook details and means they can share all their favourite Punditit stories and opinions with their Facebook friends through their Facebook newsfeed.

The site has been developed by Fraser Smeaton and Gregor McLaren. Fraser’s experience includes working in marketing for BT and Mars. Gregor, who also has a marketing background, has played rugby for Scotland at age group level and is Grandson of renowned rugby commentator Bill Mclaren. so has sports Punditry in his blood

Site founder Fraser Smeaton believes that the site will quickly capitalize on the on-line social networking phenomenon: “Sport has always promoted debate and opinion and this will be the definitive sport news site because the knowledge and passion of the fans will decide what is worth reading. Using Facebook Connect gives our users the option of having these opinions heard and spread to a massive audience.”

He continued: “The site concept is really very simple. It empowers everyday sports fans and puts them at the centre of sports news. They become the pundit by posting the latest and most interesting content and adding their own opinion and in doing so make it easy for everyone else to find the best sports news on the web.”
