The UK’s leading digital multiplex cinema chain to roll-out digital projectors from NEC Displays for 3D movies

London, 26th January 2009: NEC Display Solutions today announced that its digital projectors have been selected by Cineworld. Cineworld, which currently has the largest digital estate of any exhibitor in the UK, will deploy a mix of NEC’s NC1600 and NC2500 digital projectors across its 75 sites nationwide in order to show next generation 3D movies. Founded in 1995, the Company’s portfolio includes five out of the ten highest grossing cinemas in the UK and Ireland.

Heralded as the greatest cinematic innovation since the advent of colour 70 years ago, digital 3D reproduction eliminates all of the deterioration issues that can arise from reproducing film, enabling cinema go-ers to see movies straight from the producer-intended source. With thirteen Hollywood movies due for release in 3D this year, Cineworld is more than doubling the number of digital screens across its estate, aided by NEC’s digital projectors. The roll-out will coincide with the release of the forthcoming 3D blockbuster movies, Bolt, on 6th February and Monsters versus Aliens on 3rd April.

“The decision to go for NEC technology was based on many factors. Ultimately our choice came down to quality, performance and service. The projectors will be in service for many years to come and so having total confidence in their reliability is critical and we definitely have this with NEC,” commented Steve Wiener, CEO of Cineworld Group PLC.

A founding partner and official technology solution provider to the o2, NEC’s digital cinema projectors deliver uncompromising brightness, sharper graphics and stunning colour. NEC’s NC2500S is the world’s brightest DLP (Digital Light Projecting) cinema projector and also the world’s first DLP projector for screens up to 30m wide. Including state-of-the-art technology, it boasts precise 2048x1080 resolution and delivers high contrast images. The NC2500S is easy to operate, user-friendly and requires minimal maintenance. For screens up to 20m wide, the NC1600C delivers high quality output and ease of operation. Both projectors offer one-touch operation and memory functions for lens position and lamp output.

Simon Jackson, vice president Northern Europe for NEC Display Solutions said: “We are thrilled to have been selected by Cineworld. NEC is leading the market in digital cinema projection and our best-in-class technology continues to go from strength to strength. This latest contract with another sector leader just goes to prove that. Digital projection is a hot topic right now – the clarity, quality and flexibility lends itself, not just to the latest 3D blockbuster, but also to alternative events such as the World Cup and Formula 1, through to the opera and live concerts. It gives the audience a stunning experience that is arguably the next best thing to actually being there.”
