London, England, 28th January, 2009: 5NINES Data Centres, the UK’s leading developer of Energy Optimised Data Centres (EODC™) have created a breakthrough design for its Elean Data Centre Campus, near Cambridge, England that reduces energy costs by almost 30 per cent and reduce carbon emissions by 40%, over traditionally designed data centres.5NINES will also used waste heat to provide a local housing development with zero carbon heating and hot water.
5NINES are able to achieve 30 per cent cost savings at the Elean Data Centre Campus by using the waste heat from the adjacent BIO-Mass power station to drive an estate wide absorption cooling infrastructure. This provides sufficient cooling for each of the 7 data centres without requiring electricity. With approximately 40% of all energy consumed by data centres being used to maintain the facilities ambient environment, the commercial benefits within the 5NINES design are immense with cooling produced effectively for free and zero carbon. Carbon produced by Data centres globally is anticipated to eclipse that of the global airline industry within the next 5 years; therefore if 5NINES EODC™ standard was adopted globally it would save hundreds of billions of dollars in aviation carbon tax and eliminate millions of tonnes of carbon.

5NINES has worked with CoCal, a specialist energy consultancy, who carried out an extensive audit of the latest design scheme and confirmed the levels of efficiencies available to 5NINES Elean tenants. In addition the development will reduce the carbon produced by the equivalent of taking 91,000 family cars off the road annually, when compared with other non-EODC™ facilities.

About Elean Data Centre Campus
Elean is a development of 65,000m2, being built on the former Mepal airfield site near Cambridge, England. The project is a joint venture between 5NINES and BNB, a leading privately held property investment firm. The development has full fibre availability, and allows full data synchronisation with major UK Cities including Birmingham, Nottingham and Leeds as well as the financial district in London, so these savings are likely to be made by City firms.
Using the adjacent Biomass power station, Elean will use absorption chilling to cool the servers, negating the requirement for electricity. This will cut the amount of energy used from 70MW to 34MW. In addition, the campus will also use waste heat to provide 100% carbon-neutral heating and hot water to 450 local homes which will be built by BNB, reducing its environmental impact and further establishing its sustainability credentials.
