The Help for Heroes Garden 2009

It has been well documented that gardening can help alleviate the stresses associated with a high-powered job, but what if you’ve just been asked to design a garden for the Chelsea Flower Show?

As a director of a successful customer insight and strategy business which boasts an enviable list of blue-chip clients and a second office in Sydney, Australia, Will Beresford is no stranger to blood, sweat and tears. And now Will has rolled up his sleeves once more to tackle a different challenge – designing a garden in aid of Help for Heroes for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Combining his business creativity with a passion for garden design has proved a winning formula for Will, as his collaboration with friend Drusilla Stewart was recently accepted for the 2009 event in May.

The garden has been designed in honour of wounded servicemen and women, and was inspired by conversations with the wives of servicemen who are returning to Afghanistan this year. Eschewing the usual symbols of war and remembrance, the garden has been designed as a sanctuary, offering restorative and therapeutic qualities as well being practical for those dealing with lifelong injuries to explore and fully enjoy.

“The most satisfying way to support a charity is by doing something that you love to do” says Will. “In my case, I am building a garden at one of the biggest flower shows in the world. That in itself is a huge honour, but to be doing this in aid of such a great cause that is benefiting people who have given so much makes it really something quite special indeed.”

The Chelsea Flower Show runs from the 19th to the 23rd May, 2009.
