The most popular way to ask someone out on a first date is by text message, according to a recent survey by Envirofone.com, the online mobile recycling site. Of 150 people surveyed, aged 22 to 45, 35% said they would make their first move via text message.

A face-to-face request was the next most popular choice, with 26% stating they would rather this more traditional approach; closely followed by the Facebook generation, with 20% saying they would ask someone out via a social networking site. Least popular was asking someone out over the telephone, with just 6% of the vote, while emailing your heart’s desire was only a favourite option for 13%.

Commenting on the findings, Nick Brown, managing director at Envirofone.com said: “I was quite surprised as had expected email and sites such as Facebook to be more popular. I think people still feel the mobile phone is a more personal form of communication, and sending a text message is potentially far less embarrassing then making a phone call!”

In 2006 120 million text messages were sent on Valentine’s Day*, and as people look for ways to save money this February 14th, Nick believes more people in relationships will opt to send a romantic text. “Sending a text rather than a card is probably a more popular option for men, as few relish the prospect of choosing a card. Though for those truly sending a Valentine to an as yet unrequited love, it’s tricky to be a secret admirer when your mobile number pops up!”

For those looking to find that extra bit of spending money for Valentine’s Day, you can recycle your old mobile phone at www.envirofone.com and receive up to £100 cash back.
