Online sales volume nearly reached the same as the Christmas peak yesterday as the snowy weather made people stay at home and shop online.

Online sales have today nearly quadrupled from their usual level according to the UK’s largest discount voucher code website,, with huge sales throughout the day.

As well as the fact that yesterday was ‘National Sickie Day’, the extreme weather much of the country has seen caused an online shopping ‘frenzy’, with sales 392% higher than the leading online discount site’s average Monday sales, making yesterday the busiest day online since the launch of the site two years ago, excluding Christmas.

With schools closed and many employees unable to make their way into work due to the weather conditions, saw a huge rise in sales of holidays, clothes and electronic items in particular.

Mark Pearson, Managing Director and founder of the site had the following to say,

“Despite the fact that transport around the country has ground to a standstill, online shopping has snowballed, with yesterday proving to be the biggest day MyVoucherCodes has seen since Christmas when we enjoyed over 30 sales every minute.

“I attribute the record to the heaviest snowfall in 18 years, meaning that people are stuck in at home, as well as the fact that yesterday was ‘National Sickie Day’ the day when more people called in ill than any other day of the year. Online shopping has benefitted because it can in no way be affected by the adverse weather conditions. We expect more of the same today as schools and many places of work continue to recommend their students and employees stay at home.”

MyVoucherCodes launched 26 months ago and in that time has become the leading free voucher and discount code Website in the UK. The site regularly achieves over 8 million unique visitors per month and over 500,000 people have now signed up to the weekly newsletter that delivers the latest bargains and discounts into their inbox.

The site monitors and updates the new vouchers and discount codes every day thanks to a combination of people sending them in to help other consumers and the site owner using technology to keep a watchful eye on the market place.
