- Boost to Waste2Tricity’s plans to build its first waste-to-energy pilot plant -
Waste2Tricity Limited has secured an exclusive UK agreement with AFC Energy plc for the supply of alkaline fuel cells to be integrated into Waste2Tricity’s unique system for the conversion of municipal solid waste into electricity, which has significant environmental and cost benefits over other methods of electricity generation. AFC Energy is an innovative producer of low-cost new generation fuel cells targeting waste hydrogen in commercial applications.
New British venture Waste2Tricity aims to become the most efficient converter of waste into electricity by combining the fuel cells with plasma gasification and other proven technologies. It has the potential to play a major role in the reduction of waste going to landfill and provide local authorities with a revenue stream, as well as being a commercially viable proposition.
“We are delighted our agreement with AFC Energy has been finalised, taking us a further step towards realising our vision of converting waste into energy efficiently and at the lowest possible cost,” says Peter Jones, a director of Waste2Tricity.
Waste2Tricity is currently in negotiation to secure the agreement of a number of strategic partners to proceed with its first 50,000 tonne pilot plant, representing Stage One of its programme - combining plasma gasification with internal combustion engines (ICE) to generate electricity.
It is in Stage Two of Waste2Tricity’s programme that the ICE will be replaced with AFC Energy fuel cells, potentially increasing the net output of electricity by a minimum of 60% over an ICE system, or by 130% over a steam turbine system. When in wide operation, the AFC fuel cell will have a far lower manufacturing carbon footprint than existing rare earth substrates, and stored electricity becomes ‘portable’ without the need for expensive grid investment (quoted as up to £15-20 billion spend over the next decade). This could produce a corresponding reduction in the infrastructure footprint, such as copper cables, pylons, planning and visual intrusion.
The Waste2Tricity methodology, using AFC Energy’s fuel cells, has significant environmental benefits, including higher electricity output from the same feedstock resulting in lower CO2 emissions per KWh. It has the potential to make a significant contribution to UK electricity supply, particularly in the generation of renewable energy.
