The Grand National Guide website has been busy with traffic following the announcement of the weights for the Grand National 2009.

The weight which a horse carries in the race has a big influence on their chances of winning. Now the task of picking the best bets and tips for the 2009 race can really get underway!

Exotic Dancer was allocated top weight of all of the Grand National Runners but the Grand National Guide predicts that he and several others at the top of the weights may not be in the final line up for the race on 4th April.

"Several horses at the top of the weights look unlikely to run. With weight being one of the key factors which effects who will win the grand national, those looking to place their bets now must take this into account."

If the horse at the top of the handicap is withdrawn, then the weights of all the other runners rise.

"We think that the weights could all rise by up to 8lb. With no horse having won the Grand National off a weight of more than 11st 5lb in the last 30 years, we should be looking to horses who have been allocated a weight of 10st 11lb and lower."

This is good news for backers of fancied horses Hear The Echo, Butlers Cabin and Black Appalachi who received Grand National Weights of 10-11, 10-5 and 10-11 respectively.

Several horses have been well backed following the weights. Big Fella Thanks, trained by Paul Nicholls, has been set 10-7 and is 16/1 from 25/1, 2006 Hennessy Gold Cup winner State Of Play has been allotted 10-8 and is 25/1 from 40/1 in places whilst 2007 Grand National winner Silver Birch, who has been set the same weight as when successful two years ago (10-6), is now 33/1 from 50/1 with many bookies.

The announcement of the weights has fueled further discussion on the popular Grand National blog. Finding the winner is a year round job for the experts that hang out there.
