This year’s ApacheCon Europe throws the Hackathon wide open, as well as launching Apache BarCamp European Style and unashamedly developer-orientated Geek for Geeks track

Amsterdam, The Netherlands – 11 February 2009 - ApacheCon Europe, the official user conference of The Apache Software Foundation, has announced three brand new features for this year’s event to be held at Amsterdam’s Mövenpick Hotel, from 23–27 March 2009.

This March, the two-day Hackathon codefest, which has been exclusive to Apache committers at previous events, will be thrown wide open. This will let attendees join in and it will help to equip them with intimate knowledge of how to commit code for

Apache projects and how the Apache Community operates.

Also new is Apache BarCamp, European style. After debuting at ApacheCon US 2008, held last November in New Orleans, the conference will bring Europe its first Apache BarCamp. This ad hoc method of learning, “unconference” style, is set to provide off-the-cuff presentations, discussions, demos and interaction from participants.

Another new launch is the original Geek for Geeks track. This promises highly technical developer-oriented sessions on Hadoop, Apache HTTP Server, Sling and more.

With The Apache Software Foundation celebrating its tenth anniversary this year,

ApacheCon Europe 2009 has all the hallmarks of a celebrated and useful week of

Open Source expertise, learning and hands on guidance. From half-day to

two-day training classes, to more than 60 sessions by the creators of Open Source software, such as the Apache HTTP Server, Tomcat, Lucene, CouchDB, Hadoop and more, the conference is expected to allow attendees to share knowledge and network with thought leaders in Open Source.

With exciting keynotes and sessions scheduled, ApacheCon Europe contains everything delegates need to know about:

• Apache HTTP Server & Tomcat

• Search & Data Mining Technologies

• Lucene, Mahout, Jackrabbit

• SOA: ServiceMix, ActiveMQ, CXF and more!

• Java technologies, including Wicket, POI and Shindig

• Build technologies

• Software in the cloud

• The Business of Open Source
