Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service were looking for a way to improve their internal information communication methods, and hoping for a simple, successful and efficient solution to ensure staff were able to get their hands on the most up to date information.
Due to the number of sites covered by the service – it has 20 operational fire stations, plus a number of office buildings as well as staff working remotely from home and from partner agency buildings - the service needed a solution to help reduce the volume of email traffic and paper-based information it was circulating, and minimise the opportunities for information to be mislaid in transit.
Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service hoped an intranet could help provide a live answer to their difficulties and help keep staff in the loop, and simplify and manage the information currently being stored in flat file areas of their network serving:
• 750 employees working on a variety of shift patterns
• around 250 of whom are not permanently based within one of the organisation’s buildings
• only around 130 of whom work from computers on a daily basis
They approached Odyssey Interactive to help them implement a system that would appeal to staff and help engage them in the new communication process.

The fire and rescue service also required a workspace management area, due to the number of documents requiring version control. The Advanced Document Management system means that users will be accessing the right version of a document - very important with the number of policies and procedures the brigade has to work to.
“Members of staff are already reporting back to us on their positive experiences with I:DRIVE. The end result has helped reduce the time and frustration they have experienced previously. A number of users are now able to add and manage content –which means departments can take ownership of their areas.

“This has meant that we have been able to achieve our initial requirements within budget, ahead of schedule, and with staff taking active steps to become involved with the system and help keep content up to date, accurate and in circulation. We also have the opportunity to enhance and build upon the original product at our own pace in the future.”
Other applications the organisation is making good use of are the Staff Directory, Interactive Learning, Statistics package, Staff Surveying and mandatory read feature for documents.
