Kevin Taylor, president of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations, sets out 10 tips for using social media in PR in the latest issue of PR Success Monthly, the how-to-do-it e-newsletter for PR and marketing professionals published by New Venture Publishing.

“The biggest mistake possible is to assume that social media doesn’t matter – that it is somehow peripheral to your work,” Taylor says. His advice draws on the latest updates to the CIPR’s social media best practice guidelines.

Cliff Saran, managing editor (technology) at Computer Weekly provides some advice for PR pros on what he’s looking for in the newsletter’s “Five minutes with…” slot. Saran says that it’s important for PRs to understand that Computer Weekly is now a multimedia platform. They could gain from working within the Web 2.0 format using technologies such as Twitter, blogs, podcasts and video.

Kaila Krayewski, communications manager at Oban Multilingual Strategy, describes how a controversy generated plenty of PR coverage for the company, a multilingual SEO, search and online marketing specialist.

The PR Writers’ Clinic focuses on why some quotations in press releases get picked up and others don’t.

And there’s a light-hearted look at the PR lessons from Michael O’Leary, Ryanair chief executive’s suggestion that the airline might start charging for using in-flight lavatories.

The Dairy Dates section of PR Success Monthly includes up-coming training events – the Writing for Publication Masterclass on 12 March and the Perfect Public Relations Masterclass on 13 March.

PR Success Monthly is e-mailed free each month to PR and marketing professionals who register to receive it.
