bmi, the business airline, has been awarded Best Card Benefits Programme of the Year at the 2009 Card Awards. The prize was awarded for the bmi American Express Credit Card and recognises the airline’s commitment to providing outstanding benefits and value to its customers. The card was also shortlisted in two more categories for the Best New Credit Card Product of the Year and Best Affinity or Co-branded Credit Card Programme.

Judged by a panel of industry experts, the Card Awards recognise customer service, excellence and innovation in the UK and Irish card payments industry.

bmi launched the bmi American Express Credit Card with Bank of America to offer customers a compelling and prestigious card which would incorporate bmi’s Diamond Club, the UK’s most generous frequent flyer programme. Card holders are automatically enrolled into Diamond Club, giving them the chance to earn destinations miles every time they spend using the card. Plus, Card holders earn additional miles when they purchase bmi flights on with their card.

The high activity rates and retail spend revealed to the judges demonstrated that customers understand the simplicity and generosity of the programme by making everyday spend on their card.

Upon receiving the award, Juliet Hutchin, Head of Loyalty at bmi said:

β€œWe are delighted to have won such a prestigious award. Customer loyalty forms an integral part of our strategy and more than ever in the current economic climate loyal customers are vital to our company success. Diamond Club is the most generous freqeunt flyer programme in the UK and this award demonstrates our commitment to providing members with fantastic rewards.”

Diamond Club has three tiers of membership, with Silver and Gold members receiving a range of additional benefits such as access to worldwide business lounges, priority check in, car hire upgrades and additional free baggage allowance.

The award follows a series of market leading initiatives that has seen bmi become the first airline to abolish fuel surcharges on all flights to UK and European destinations. bmi was the first British airline to trial the OnAir service offering customers access to text messages and email and has recently become the first airline to offer paperless boarding and mobile check-in on all domestic flights. Other recent news from bmi includes a new route to Kiev which will launch on 29 March 2009 and the doubling of services to Tel Aviv and Riyadh, as the airline seeks to focus on key business routes.

This month also sees the launch of the bmi Chauffeur Drive service for those travelling in Business Class, complimentary on selected fare types, on flights to moscow and Saudi Arabia at both ends of the route, allowing Business Class customers to extend the bmi service beyond the flight for more convenient and hassle-free travel.
