Miracle Theatre is bringing one of Kurt Vonnegut’s best-loved novels, Cat’s Cradle, to the London stage this April. Adapted and directed by Bill Scott, this is the first UK theatre adaptation of the 1960’s cult classic, which will be playing at The Courtyard Theatre, Hoxton from 7-25 April.
Author of American counterculture classics such as The Sirens of Titan (1959), Slaughterhouse-Five (1969) and Breakfast of Champions (1973), Kurt Vonnegut used fantasy and science fiction to examine the horrors and absurdities of the 20th Century. In Cat’s Cradle, he takes a satirical look at our obsession with Modern Science, which promises progress while in reality bringing about the end of the world. It is perhaps even more relevant today than when it was first published in 1963.
In this thought-provoking and entertaining production, Cornwall’s Miracle Theatre takes Vonnegut’s satirical wit and sharpens it with their hallmark mix of comedy, physical theatre, film, animation and music. Fans of the novel will enjoy the ingenious way in which the ‘shameless untruths’ that lie at the heart of the enigmatic Bokonon’s home-made religion are shared with the world.
“For this production we have employed techniques more usually seen on the big screen to bring this fast moving story to the stage,” says Miracle’s Artistic Director Bill Scott. “Our creative team has worked together on several film and theatre productions, evolving a process that uses video, model-making, blue screen and digital animation and integrating them seamlessly into live performance. Cat’s Cradle has a unique cinematic style.”
Miracle Theatre has been touring lively, inventive and very popular shows throughout the country for 30 years. Audiences are promised an evening of exciting and extraordinary visual theatre, which will take them on what The New York Times described as ‘an unforgettable ride’ to the Caribbean island of San Lorenzo.
‘Live by the harmless untruths that make you brave and kind and healthy and happy.’ Kurt Vonnegut
‘Vonnegut is George Orwell, Dr Caligari and Flash Gordon compounded into one writer...a zany but moral mad scientist.’
“As enjoyable as it is ambitious.” British Theatre Guide
“Beautifully understated Miracle magic . . . an ingenious and thoughtful adaptation.’ Western Morning News
