… Akamai Media Delivery Solution ensures fast and successful downloads of its media to its 35,000 global alumni users…
London, UK– 11 March 2009 - Akamai Technologies Limited, a subsidiary of Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leader in powering rich media, dynamic transactions and enterprise applications online, today announced that the London Business School (LBS) has adopted Akamai’s Stream OS solution to simplify the management of its expanding digital media library and Akamai’s Media Delivery solution to ensure the highest quality download experience of its extensive media library to the School’s 35,000 global alumni.
The School’s alumni Portal houses a vast media library, including content relating to the school programme, subjects, school events and course-related images, materials from faculty lectures, guest speakers and major events that take place during the academic year. With the increased demand from users for videos downloads, in addition to portal users accessing content via an ever broadening array of devices, the School needed to better manage its downloadable rich media content and ensure a consistently high-standard of delivery to global users.
“Over the last few years, we have seen a significant increase in mobile portal users who need to access the media library from wherever their business has taken them,” explained Russell Altendorff, Director ISD at the London Business School. “Added to this has been our expanding business into Dubai and Hong Kong and the fact that Internet users have become increasingly discerning and demand a far higher quality of delivery than previous years.”
A live, comparative trial of four network providers in 2008 saw Akamai out-perform the competition by playing 100% of the surveyed videos and surpassing the other companies in the trial in terms of picture and sound quality, receiving the highest ratings for both. In comparison, the tests revealed some surprising results with all of the other suppliers failing to deliver at least one of the test streams.
Stream OS is an enterprise solution that simplifies rich media management and offers flexible tools to control content and enforce business policies. It will help LBS transition it’s extensive library of media assets, which it holds in multiple formats, from the hosting provider and simplify the future management of those assets. Together with Akamai’s Media Delivery solution, LBS can deliver a flawless media experience to its worldwide audience by leveraging Akamai’s global platform of 40,000 servers. The solution ensures that LBS can easily handle peak traffic conditions and large file sizes, and allows the School to bypass traditional server and bandwidth limitations without requiring additional infrastructure.
“With Akamai, we can be assured that the content from our media library is being made accessible by the best content delivery platform in the world,” concluded Altendorff.
Malcolm Rowe, Regional Manager of Northern Europe at Akamai, said, “Hundreds of enterprises worldwide use the Akamai global platform to sell, inform, entertain, market, advertise, deliver software and conduct their business online. London Business School has been consistently ranked as one of the top business schools in the world and this year it is ranked No1. We are very pleased to be able to help such an esteemed academic establishment maintain its well-deserved and long-standing reputation by enabling the School to better manage its ever-expanding media library, and ensuring that its users have seamless access to the School’s programme-critical resources wherever in the world they are located.”
