London, UK, Friday April 3 2009: Procurement leaders should take advantage of the economic downturn to reduce costs but should also put their own houses in order, say procurement consultants Efficio.

In the first of a series of Viewpoint papers, which will examine business and economic issues associated with procurement, Efficio says all aspects of procurement operations should be reviewed to make sure they are efficient and effective.

The paper, The Challenge of the Downturn - the imperatives for procurement in the face of worsening economic conditions, says procurement leaders should protect their suppliers so that they have a strong supply base when the downturn ends.

In the introduction to the paper Efficio Chief Operating Officer Alex Klein says: “Procurement leaders should remember that the downturn will end at some point.

“They will need a thriving supplier base to enable them to come out of the downturn and reap the rewards of new economic optimism.

“At Efficio we believe the current global downturn places huge pressures on businesses. But we believe it also presents opportunities which, if managed expertly, will bring success in the future.”
