Poland's PTK Centertel Prepares for Dual Band GSM 900/1800

PARIS -- Poland's first GSM 1800 operator, PTK Centertel,
has awarded a US$11 million expansion contract to Nortel
Networks* [NYSE/TSE: NT] to prepare for dual band GSM
900/1800 operation. PTK Centertel was awarded a GSM 900
license in July.

Nortel Networks will supply, install and commission radio
base station equipment, including S8000 base transceiver
stations, in Krakow, Katowice, Wroclaw and Poznan. The dual
band 900/1800 network is expected to be in service by March

"This contract further strengthens the on-going relationship
between PTK Centertel and Nortel Networks," said Marek
Józefiak, general director, PTK Centertel. "Nortel Networks
has provided excellent equipment and service in the past,
and we are now looking to them to take us through a smooth
evolution to dual band operation."

This latest award, combined with an original equipment and
services agreement from September 1997, brings PTK
Centertel's three-year investment in Nortel Networks
wireless infrastructure equipment to more than US$ 60

"Eastern European countries are a key market for Nortel
Networks," said Cesar Cesaratto, president, Wireless
Solutions, EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa), Nortel
Networks. "The subscriber base in the region has grown
substantially, and capacity demands are high."

"Dual band networks are the logical next step for operators
seeking to increase their network capacity," Cesaratto said.
"We are committed to providing technology that delivers high
capacity for network growth, and to supporting customers
like PTK Centertel in evolving their networks."

PTK Centertel, the leading Polish cellular operator, is
jointly owned by Telekomunikacja Polska S.A. (TP S.A.), the
public operator for Poland's fixed networks, as well as
