BUCHAREST, Romania – April 7, 2009 – BitDefender researchers in the Antimalware Labs have identified a new variant of the Downadup / Conficker worm, which has been designed to circumvent detection and disinfection existing removal tools.
In addition to blocking access to any website of antivirus vendors, as well as third-parties offering online scanning services or removal tools, this latest malicious binary has been updated to refuse users access to BitDefender’s online repository for distributing disinfection and removal tools. See http://bdtools.net
Updated disinfection tools are now available online at www.disinfecttools.com, a domain that is not currently blacklisted on the compromised machines. This also includes an updated version of the removal tool for computer networks (the only one available on the market).
Commenting on this new variant Viorel Canja, head of BitDefender Labs, said: "To be absolutely safe online, the most effective countermeasures are to ensure that all web users are fully protected by a complete and up-to-date anti-malware software solution.
All current BitDefender 2009 products will detect the worm as Win32.Worm.Downadup.Gen and stop its execution before it is able to perform changes on the system.
