Swallows Nest Cottage in Devon

Devon Eco Holidays’ Gold award demonstrates that a high end luxury holiday can have a low impact on the planet

Devon Eco Holidays has been assessed by the Green Tourism Business (GTBS) and immediately awarded a Gold. This is the only Gold awarded in the South West under the tougher new criteria and owners Neil and Susan Tappenden are particularly delighted as it is their first assessment.

Having already being graded a 5 star, by Visit Britain, Devon Eco Holidays’ Gold award demonstrates that a high end luxury holiday can have a low impact on the planet.

Commenting on the award, owner Susan said: "We have worked hard on every detail to make sure our cottage, Swallows Nest, is as luxurious and sustainable as it can be. We want to inspire people to enjoy a deluxe green holiday in wonderful Devon and realise just how stylish ecological living can be.”

Neil and Susan's enterprise Devon Eco Holidays has combined sustainability and comfort, using a range of eco building methods, energy efficient technology, renewable resources and recycled materials. If you want to combine your holiday with learning from Neil and Susan's considerable experience and expertise, then you can choose two dedicated sessions from a range of subjects including:
• buying an eco small holding
• renewable energy
• fuel security
• permaculture and vegetable growing
• wood heating systems and solar panels

GTBS were impressed with Devon Eco Holidays. GTBS Assessor, Stuart Park commented: “Susan and Neil have brought to Devon a green philosophy that ensures guests of Swallows Nest will have a low impact holiday whilst not compromising on quality.

The most has been made of the fantastic location – sustainably managed woodland is harvested on site and used to provide heating and hot water. This is combined with modern efficient appliances, eco gadgets, excellent waste reducing measures and promotion of the best local and ethical products available in the area.
Guests can be confident in staying in green accommodation where the owners have a genuine passion for protecting the environment - Truly deserving of a GTBS GOLD award!”

About the Green Tourism Business (GTBS)
The GTBS ( is the national sustainable tourism certification scheme for the UK. Originally developed in partnership with Visit Scotland, it is now the only certification scheme validated by Visit Britain, through the International Centre for Responsible Tourism (ICRT). “GTBS provides excellent value for money to a wide range of tourism firms with first class environmental advice and auditing. Satisfaction rates of certified firms are very high and drop out rates low, both for the smallest of tourism firms and increasingly at corporate level.”

Businesses opting to join Green Tourism are assessed by a qualified grading advisor against a rigorous set of criteria, covering a range of areas, like energy and water efficiency, waste management, biodiversity and more. Those businesses that meet the required standard, receive a Bronze, Silver, or Gold award based on their level of achievement. The current network of members is comprised of a wide range of business types, including accommodation providers, visitor attractions, corporate offices and others.
