The multicultural spirit of the German capital is due to be celebrated in few weeks, as the 2009 edition of the Berlin Carnival of Cultures takes place in the city.

Also known as the Karneval der Kulturen, the event which takes place between May 29th and June 1st, involves a wide array of attractions, including music, dancing, food, drink and art in the Kreuzberg district of the municipality.

Carnival groups from around 70 different countries take part in a parade through the area, with most activities taking place around Blucherplatz and the procession itself normally running down Gneisenaustrasse.

However, this year, the pageant will head down Hermannplatz and a total of 98 groups have been confirmed. More than 350 stalls are due to be set up and will sell international products in the form of arts, crafts and gourmet cuisine.
