Equality and diversity in the martial arts is being further embraced by the National Association of Karate and Martial Art Schools (NAKMAS) with the national roll out of its Equality Action Plan (EAP) 2008-2011.

Having already achieved Foundation Level of the Equality Standard: A Framework for Sport accreditation, NAKMAS is now aiming to achieve Preliminary Level and is stepping up its equality and diversity commitment by publicising its EAP to non-member clubs, local authorities, county sports partnerships, sports councils and others to encourage a wider approach to addressing inequality.

Sandra Beale, NAKMAS Director of Operations and Lead Equality Manager, says: “It is with pleasure that I can formally promote our Equality Action Plan. The NAKMAS Equality Team has devoted a great deal of effort to reach this stage of the equality strategy.

“Our main goal is to achieve complete equality within NAKMAS – to be awarded the Equality Standard: A Framework for Sport is the secondary goal, albeit a very important one.

“By reaching a wider audience with the Plan, NAKMAS is able to garner support from other organisations with similar commitments to equality as well as providing support to them in the development of an overall strategy to ensure equality in the sporting sphere and beyond.”

The full Equality Action Plan is available on the NAKMAS website and to members via NAKMAS’ In Touch magazine.

The NAKMAS EAP has been incorporated into its Business Plan and was drawn up as a result of data collection and analysis and includes training for all staff and management; discussion with other similar organisations and equality groups and further research into under-represented groups within NAKMAS.

Sandra Beale adds: “The EAP must constantly evolve, which is why publicising it to new audiences outside of NAKMAS’ governance remit is so important. We will monitor and review it regularly and seek feedback on it to make sure it is performing at its optimum.”
