Fuld & Company, the competitive intelligence and analysis firm ('competitive intelligence' translates as 'shangye diaocha') which first opened its doors in Cambridge, Massachusetts 30 years ago, today announces the opening of an office in Dalian, China. Fuld intends to develop the market for competitive intelligence in China and the new office will be run under the guidance of Asia expert, Dr Denis Simon, Senior Advisor for China Operations.

Commenting on the decision to open in China, company founder Leonard Fuld said “Our clients increasingly need on-the-ground analysis of their competitive environment in Asia, and specifically in China. With multinationals and national Chinese companies themselves growing in size and influence in the global market our clients from around the world need this missing piece to their puzzle – and increasingly want this analysis from a single firm. With the opening of our China office, we have the capability of delivering truly global competitive intelligence services from North America, Europe and Asia”.

Dr Simon, who has been working in China since the 1980s, explains the importance of an on-the-ground consultancy “The distinctive features of business in China are that it is highly fluid and turbulent. Whilst things have no doubt improved over the last decade, the Chinese economy is reforming at an uneven pace and all businesses – foreign and local - are beset by uncertainty and unpredictability. Business relationships and partnerships can change overnight; coupled with an erratic applications of laws and regulations anyone operating in China needs to monitor these shifting competitive positions.

“Furthermore, foreign companies which entered the Chinese market in the 1980s were largely competing against each other at the higher end of the market. Now, with China a member of the World Trade Organisation and enhancements in Chinese manufacturing and R&D capabilities, Western companies are increasingly competing head-to-head against Chinese companies, as well as those from Korea and Japan. So the smart company today will need to understand the progressively more complex interplay between local and international competition.”

Leonard Fuld added “This explains why Fuld & Company have chosen this moment to bring their brand of competitive intelligence to China and its senior staff – all Chinese nationals – are highly experienced in the consultancy industry each offering in-depth experience of different business sectors.

“China is no longer the factory for the world. We offer critical knowledge that will make the difference between winning and losing. In this uncertain climate the key to success is managing intelligence.”

Fuld & Company chose Dalian as their location in China as it is one of the country's most progressive cities; has become one of the leading software and outsourcing centres in Asia, and is on a path to become one of the foremost centres of innovation in the People's Republic of China.
