Endorsed by customers and partners, Jaguar CTS provides
high-performance foundation for transaction-oriented
applications on the Web

Sybase today announced the general availability of Jaguar
CTS, a new component transaction server that provides an
open, scalable environment for developing and deploying a
new breed of customer-centric business applications over the
Internet, intranets and client/server networks.

Jaguar CTS is the industry's only component transaction
server based on open computing standards and the first to
support Enterprise JavaBeans. Jaguar CTS has already been
endorsed by 50 partners and will begin shipping to customers

Jaguar CTS has been successfully beta tested by numerous
companies preparing to deploy critical business applications
on the Web. In addition, more than 35 leading hardware
manufacturers, software developers and system integrators
have signed on to support Jaguar as part of Sybase's Open
Solutions Partner Program (see related release). Together,
Sybase and its partners plan to develop and deliver
complementary solutions to enable a new breed of
transactional applications using Jaguar's powerful Internet

"In the past, organisations have been stymied in their
efforts to build and deploy thin-client OLTP applications on
the Web due to the lack of robust application services to
manage business components in the middle tier. Some type of
Component Transaction Server is required," said Anne Thomas,
Senior Consultant and Editor-in-chief Distributed Computing
Monitor, Patricia Seybold Group. Sybase, with Jaguar CTS, is
helping to define this category of middleware as it
addresses the critical requirements to make OLTP
applications on the Web a reality."

Jaguar CTS also helps speed the development and deployment
of transaction-based applications through its support for
open standard technologies such as Java/JavaBeans, ActiveX
and C/C++. With Jaguar CTS, businesses can quickly deliver
Web-based, customer-centric applications such as order
entry, customer self-service, help desk, call centre, sales
force automation and others and leverage those applications
to maintain a competitive advantage.

"Throughout our beta programme, we have received an
extremely positive response to Jaguar CTS," said Mitchell
Kertzman, Chairman and CEO for Sybase. "The shipment of
Jaguar CTS is an important milestone in Sybase's corporate
strategy to enable customer-centric computing with the
Adaptive Component Architecture."

Technical notes to editors: How Jaguar CTS Works Jaguar
CTS is a high-performance component transaction server
designed for delivering scalable multi-tier transactional
applications for the Web or for traditional corporate
networks. Jaguar CTS combines the best features of an object
request broker and TP monitor to provide an easy-to-use,
scalable, secure execution environment.

Jaguar CTS leads a new category of products that is emerging
as the Internet/intranet paradigm takes hold in the
enterprise. In this paradigm, client-side logic for
enterprise applications must be as small and efficient as
possible to conserve network bandwidth. To accomplish this
goal, the applications are partitioned into three parts:
presentation logic, business logic, and database logic. The
database resides on the bottom tier of the enterprise system
to maintain and secure the organisation's information
assets. The presentation logic is dynamically downloaded to
the user's desktop, or top tier. The business logic, in this
new paradigm, resides in the middle tier or component
transaction server. The transaction server is then
responsible for executing the vast majority of a
corporation's business logic. This makes it a critical
component in the emerging network centric architecture.

Pricing and Availability Evaluation copies of Jaguar CTS are
available starting today via the Sybase Web site at or via Sybase's network of direct sales and
VARs. Jaguar currently supports Sun Solaris and Windows NT
operating systems. Jaguar licence pricing begins at £480 a
server, plus £95 per user seat.
